3G Reaches Nanaimo!

Looks like Rogers and Fido are now broadcasting 3G in Nanaimo. About time! I can finally experience ... slightly faster internet while walking around the mall.

Pasting in AIR 1.5

Posted on November 25, 2008 at 01:57PM

Some very handy popped up in AIR 1.5/Flash Player 10. Pasting! More components have access to the paste event, including the datagrid. Prior to the update, pasting into a datagrid involved some weird event trapping that seemed gross. But now you can just capture the paste event and grab the data from the clipboard.

   1  private function gridPasteHandler( event:Event ):void {
   2 // Verify clipboard data is usable
   3    if ( Clipboard.generalClipboard.hasFormat( ClipboardFormats.TEXT_FORMAT ) ) {
   4      var pasteData:String = Clipboard.generalClipboard.getData( ClipboardFormats.TEXT_FORMAT ) as String;
   5 // Insert code to parse the data
   6    } else {
   7      Alert.show( 'Invalid paste data.' );
   8    }
   9  }

Just a basic example of how to get the paste data into your app so you can use it.

P.S. Don't forget your imports!

AIR 1.5 is out!

Posted on November 18, 2008 at 09:15AM

Get the update to Adobe AIR 1.5, or install it for the first time if you don't already have it. All of the new features I've read are basically things for developers (so for me), but if you get it now, you don't have to update to it later. The new features definitely do add value for what the consumer gets, so you're only doing yourself a favour.

Interesting Game Concept

Posted on November 10, 2008 at 10:22AM

This is an interesting game concept that's very artsy. Doesn't look as though it'll be super difficult, but it seems like it would be very relaxing to play.

Looks pretty neat. And from checking it out, it'll probably be on XBox Live sometime in early 2009. So probably in the $8 price range.

Cause of recent global warming found!

Posted on November 8, 2008 at 09:33PM

Scientists have concluded that the recent global warming has been caused by Roberto Luongo's current hot streak. Okay... not really, but he is definitely on a hot streak. 3 shutouts in a row. And judging by his performance tonight, he's definitely earning them instead of catching a free ride. Go Luongo!

Epic Success: Gears of War 2

Posted on November 8, 2008 at 08:56PM

I think it's safe to say that any hype for Gears of War 2 was well met. And even better, there's a hint for a 3rd to make it a trilogy! Anyways, the game is amazing to play, building off of the success of the first and growing into something better.

I don't want to say much about what you actually in the game because the story is actually substantial and strong enough that it could be deemed as spoilers. But, yes, the story in the game is actually good. They do an excellent job selling it with their characters and their action, without spoiling it by over-forcing the story. Not everyone will get into the story, but I found it to be solid motivation to progress in the game.

In terms of game length, I'd say a play-through on "casual" difficulty is roughly 7-10 hours (depending on how many times you die). Not sure about other difficulties, but I'd imagine slightly longer due to the more difficult fights. Speaking of which, some of the new enemies are pretty awesome -- as are the bosses. Might be a spoiler, but the end boss is definitely easier than RAAM. You won't see

The game is nearly perfect. There's a little bit of puzzle, great story, lots of action, some really fun things to do, and man it's fun to destroy stuff with a Lancer. I can definitely recommend at least playing through the single player. I'm sure the online play is just as awesome (which I've yet to do because I've been working this weekend).

360|Flex San 2008 in San Jose videos

Posted on October 30, 2008 at 01:56PM

If you missed 360|Flex 2008 in San Jose like I did, you missed out on a great conference. Proof? Ted Patrick has posted several videos of various sessions from the event. There was a lot of great sessions, which makes me regret not making more of an effort to go down this year.

Definitely check out the videos. They'll even be useful for those that made it to the event, but didn't get to every session they wanted to. They'll even be a treat for someone looking to see what Flex and its community is all about.

Amazon Pre-Orders Intentionally Delayed?

Posted on October 30, 2008 at 12:06PM

Just curious if anyone has noticed delays for pre-order shipments? Everytime I've tried to pre-order something, the arrival date is 1-2 weeks after the release date. In the past it would arrive either on the day of release or the next. I gave it a shot after seeing a week delay, and sure enough, it was arrived exactly one week after the release date.

It could be a Canadian thing though, as I found possible claims of release day delivery for several games (Fable 2 is the one I ordered). Just curious if I'm getting bad luck or what... Would be nice to get the benefits of pre-ordering. Think I'll do in-store pick-ups for some I want on launch day from now on.

Edit: My reason of putting intentional in the title is because I've heard of a few cases of distributors getting into trouble for accidently releasing titles early. They might be trying to prevent/combat that.

Epic Fail: NHL GameCenter

Posted on October 16, 2008 at 10:48AM

It really sucks when you go from being really excited about something, to regretting a purchase. After a few blacked out Canuck games, and some blacked out games involving any two Canadian teams, I decided to enquire about what constitutes a blackout. Well, this is the e-mail response:

Dear Mike,

Each time any games air on TSN, RDS, CBC, Sportsnet, & NHL Network Canada, it will be blacked out from Game Center Live.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

If you're not familiar with hockey channels in Canada, this pretty much eliminates 75% of all games involving a Canadian NHL team, and probably 90% of the Canucks games. Simply put: do not buy NHL GameCenter if you're wanting to watch your local team play. Chances are you won't get to watch many, if any of the games. And in the event you want to use VPN or something else to access the games, don't bother:

IF YOU CIRCUMVENT OR ATTEMPT TO CIRCUMVENT ANY BLACKOUT RESTRICTION OR OTHER USE RESTRICTION: YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL BE SUBJECT TO IMMEDIATE TERMINATION AND A CHARGE OF ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100.00) FOR EARLY TERMINATION WILL BE APPLIED TO YOUR CREDIT CARD; YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO LEGAL ACTION; AND NHL ICE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REPORT SUCH MISCONDUCT TO APPROPRIATE LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES.

Yep, you'll lose your account, be charged an extra $100 and potentially more if the law enforcement bothers to pursue it (if they even can). Honestly, I should have read this before purchasing, but it looked so good that I rushed. I'm still going to try to get a refund, though I think I'm at day 6 or 7, and they say refunds are only available for the first 5 days. Regardless, NHL GameCenter is an awesome app... but they missed out what people might actually use it for: watching local games.

Finally: NHL GameCenter

Posted on October 10, 2008 at 03:22PM

Launching this weekend is NHL GameCenter. For the launch, it's free to use this weekend, then requiring either a monthly or annual subscription. What's so cool about this? You can stream 4 live games at the same time. Yep, 4 games at the same time. Or if you want to stream just a single game, you can stream at nice 1.2 mbps.

While watching the game, you get live stats, lots of live updates, chat with other people watching and a live scoreboard of the other games in the NHL. There's supposed to be other features like manually watching replays, highlights and stuff, but I haven't stumbled across that stuff yet. On the plus, the streams seem to be super stable and of decent quality.

I'm pretty stoked that the NHL has taken this initiative. I'm also glad that it was built in Flex (a technology I work with) because it's cross platform, smooth, looks great and I can watch it wherever I go. I do hope they improve some things and add in the ability to rewatch a goal at any time during the game, it would pretty much guarantee I never watch a game on a TV again (unless we can get the same interaction there as well).

iTunes Releases New Gojira Album Early!

Posted on October 5, 2008 at 09:17AM

Out of normal habit, I checked out my iTunes Alerts to see if anything was released in the past few days. Sure enough, the upcoming Gojira album, The Way of All Flesh, was there. Note that I said upcoming. It's release date is October 13th worldwide and October 14th in the USA.

I have no idea if this is a mistake or what, but I'm pretty stoked about it. Wish they'd release the unfinished Deadlock and Daath CDs early too.

Update on Oct 8th, 2008: Seems they've pulled the album for the time being... It'll be back in less than a week. Already bought my copy though.

Walmart, thank you for reminding us why DRM sucks

Posted on October 2, 2008 at 02:42PM

So Walmart announced that they're turning off their DRM servers pretty soon. This follows the prior moves by MSN and Yahoo to do the same. Guess who gets screwed... yep, the people that decidedly to legal purchase music. And now they're encouraged to burn their music in the event of moving to a new computer or a system crash. Seriously?

This is the exact reason why I've stopped purchasing music with DRM. And why I'll never buy games that push the same restrictions (oops, I bought Spore for Mac -- and I regret it -- because it's a terrible game). At least with music they give you the simple option of burning your music and ripping them. But that's an awful lot of time and CDs to do it. With games, movies, tv shows, etc... you're pretty much screwed at this point. Better hope you stay activated.

Solution: if you're shutting down your DRM service, give a tool that removes the DRM. Third-party scripts can do it, so I assume the DRM vendors can do it too. It's really the least they can do. I doubt they ever will, but damn, it should be law.

While on this topic... what's with the DRM on Call of Duty 4 for Mac? At least with the download version it sucks. I remember when I could take my disk anywhere I went, install it, play it, uninstall. Good thing I have it for the 360 -- which oddly enough, I can take to my friends house to enjoy there, no activation required.

Anyone who thinks DRM is good for the consumer is looking at it from a very narrow perspective. As its very evident now, it hurts the consumer and only delays piracy.

Using SQLite with Adobe AIR

Posted on October 1, 2008 at 07:17AM

If you're about to embark on an Adobe AIR project that will use SQLite, take this bit of advice to help you along the way. It may seem obvious or overkill for some things, but it's very likely that it will save you some work and headaches.

First, take a look at FlexORM. It's going to help you in a number of areas... one by creating and keeping your database schema up-to-date, two by creating relationships between your models (think ActiveRecord), and by handling a lot of crud work for you. Since even starting to use it, I've made some huge changes to our codebase that cleans it up and makes it a lot easier to work with.

Second, look at SQLiteadmin. If you want to inspect your database, run queries on it, or interact with your database in any way outside of your AIR app, this might be the easiest to use. It runs on AIR, so it'll run on whatever platform you're testing your AIR on. It's not a cocoamysql or SQLyog, but it'll do a lot of what you need.

The only thing I haven't really stumbled across is a good, free syncing library. I know there's LiveCycle, but it doesn't look as though it can integrate with any existing system... which is what we need. We're basically building an AIR UI for a system that has a basic web interface.

10 Things

Posted on September 24, 2008 at 02:37AM

It's early in the morning, so I'm going to get my brain going by listing 10 things... 5 things I've lost interest in and 5 things I now have interest in.

5 Now Boring Things

  • iPhone App Store
  • Canadian Federal Election
  • Hybrid engines
  • Google Chrome
  • Nintendo Wii

5 Now Exciting Things

  • Flex 4/Flash Player 10/AIR 1.5
  • Digital Distribution (music, movies, tv, games)
  • Android
  • Daylight Dies (band)
  • Fringe
I know, nothing crazy or exiting, but it's just an exercise to kick the brain into gear. Especially after pumping $50 of gas into to my car this morning.

Android Demo

Posted on September 22, 2008 at 03:56AM

A couple small previews of what to expect from Google Android. Looks a lot better than what I experienced on my old Samsung phone. Definitely some good competition to the iPhone that will hopefully further innovation on both sides.
